Telecomprovider Verizon got a discount on buying Yahoo, because of former dataleaks in the Yahoo system. Verizon will pay 4.83 billion, according to The Wallstreet Journal.
Yahoo endured cyber attacks in 2013 and 2014. In the first attack, account information of 500 million users was stolen. In the second attack, 1 billion bits of information were stolen. The cyber attacks were found last year, but already carried out years ago. Therefore, the hackers had all the time in the world to assess the information.
In the new deal between Verizon and Yahoo, Verizon has promised to not go through with any legal actions. According to rumours, Yahoo didn't notify Verizon about the data leaks in the early stage of the negotiations. The companies will however share the legal costs and responsibilities surrounding the data leaks.
Yahoo is lucky that Verizon wanted to go through with buying the company. Verizon does have a history in buying companies for large amounts. According to several sources, Verizon wants Yahoo to be able to compete with Facebook and Google in the world of advertisements.
