The current director of the FBI, James Comey, has filed a formal complaint at the American Senate hearing about the level of encryption his Bureau has to deal with on a growing basis.
Apparently, the FBI has had little luck in bypassing several forms of protective barriers on smartphones to get access to important data of multiple suspects despite getting the needed approval of the Justice Department. As much as half of all requests were deadlocked when met with encryption, which amounts to more than 3000 smartphones. According to Comey the current laws are not sufficient in aiding the Bureau in their investigation. He states that prosecution is lacking in armaments to combat these encryption and that could lead to a growing danger of anonymous terrorist attacks.
For some years the FBI was enveloped in a legal battle with Apple about their standard encryption present on Iphones and the inability of the Bureau to bypass it. To add to the FBI’s frustration, there has been a lot of resistance from several corners of society regarding the implications of a violation of privacy when trying to get complete access to people’s smartphones.
