Users of Microsoft Office have to be careful, because a large security breach in the software is being attacked since January. Microsoft has not yet provided an update to solve the issues, but is currently working on a solution.
Besides office-documents the attackers are also breaking into Windows software through office. By giving administrator rights to their selves they are able to cause even more damage.
A computer can be attacked if the user opens a malicious Office-document. All versions of Office can be attacked, even software that is used on Windows 10 systems. McAfee has given more information on the attacks.
After opening the document a hta-file is downloaded automatically. Through this file the attacker can use a random code to break into the system. If the attacker succeeds then the file will be closed and a new blank Office document is opened to make it look like nothing happened.
Microsoft has advised users to use Office Protected View until solutions and updates are set up. It is also recommended to not open any unknown files.
