14 February- Microsoft President Brad Smith has requested for an international convention on information cyber security in his blog. He states that it is necessary for countries to communicate more on this topic, especially now that the amount of attacks is increasing. Governments of countries have to take action now to ensure safety of their civilians.

Smith wrote in his blog that companies can take specific security measures in order to improve cyber security, but this will never be enough to improve the cyber security in general. According to him it is important to work collectively according to international rules. Technology companies can assist nations to improve and it is time to ''organize an independent digital Geneva convention''.

Despite an increasing amount of cyber attacks, only few rules have been made. Governments do not work according to specific guidelines. They have free play while they try to get as much information as possible, which might even contain valuable information of their own civilians. Some nationas have made agreements with each other such as the United States and China agreeing to not hack any companies in these countries. However, individual agreements do not help to improve the situation.

According to Smith, an independent organization should be formed in which experts from both governments and companies can work together to create a safer online environment. The technical sector should also work to protect consumers from cyber attacks. They should pledge not to help any governments with attacking and manipulating data. Cyber security worldwide could benefit from collective agreements on these topics.
